LUXURY : DEFINE

Luxury has changed a lot. In the past it was eating in a three-star restaurant. Now it's eating home-grown vegetables in a garden or somewhere on a mountain, or going to small cottage where you find handmade cheese, and just having a taste of that in open air, that's luxury now. In fashion it's a bit the same. In the past, haute couture was luxury. And now finding a sweater in hand-spun cashmere somewhere in the hills of Nepal is far more exciting and luxurious. -- Dries Van Noten.

According to Oxford Dictionaries :
noun (plural luxuries)
• a state of great comfort or elegance, especially when involving great expense.
• [count noun] an inessential, desirable item which is expensive or difficult to obtain.
• a pleasure obtained only rarely.

The world, culture, and the way of how modern people think these days have shifted the idea of luxury. It can be either of the three according definitions made by the Oxford Dictionary team, or perhaps the meaning itself is much closer with Van Noten's statement. With the constantly changing world, with people developing trying to adapt themselves into it, I personally refer luxury as the third Oxford definition 'a pleasure obtained only rarely'. Something you don't do very often, that when you finally get the moment of achieving it, you seize all the pleasure out, and therefore enjoy every second of it's excitement.

(1) I am a believer of the phrase knowledge is power and to be able to receive quality knowledge and information, especially when you get to receive it first, it is one of the biggest luxuries. Therefore, I personally believe that we should invest in quality printed publication, such as books and magazines; it is a form of retaining knowledge for the future. Even if the internet could keep data long enough until we have grandchilds, there is nothing that could beat the feeling of sitting/laying around, having a drink, a time alone, enjoying a good book in hand. [The worst thing about new books is that it keeps us from reading the older ones -- Joseph Joubert]

(2) That second picture was taken by a friend of mine while we were vacationing to Lombok a couple of weeks ago. The beach was rarely touched by humans, and when we were there the only people around were the five of us. The feeling of owning that piece of paradise while being humbled at the same time, it was indescribable.

(3) The shirt is 100% cotton by J.Crew and it is available through Mr.Porter. It isn't only the comfort and sustainability of such clothing that brings luxury; it's when you spend your money wisely. You save your money just because you know that it is worth to spend a little more on something with long lasting quality; you wait until you find that perfect something. It's never about having so much clothes, it's about choosing them carefully, making sure that you make the right decision, and finally, when you get to spend that amount of money you kept for so long on something you really want (with all the good reasons you have in mind), that pleasure, it's luxury.

ps : mind my photo lay-outing style; a picture within a picture (it's so tumblr, I know).
